Karen Shanley

Karen’s passion for dance has kept her happily in the dance scene since she was a little

girl. She studied with Evelyn LeMone (Pasadena Dance Theatre), as a teen she was a soloist

with Morelli Ballet in Los Angeles, CA and performed at the Greek Theatre in Alicia Alonso’s

production of “Coppelia.”

Karen earned a BA in dance from UCLA, an MA from Ohio State University. While raising two

small children she continued to train and perform at the University of Hawaii with Yasuki Sasa,

Betty Jones, Ethel Winter and other guest artists. For four years she was a featured dancer with

Hawaii Dance Theatre.

Moving to NYC, she continued her ballet training with Margaret Craske and modern with

Viola Farber. While in NYC Karen performed in the companies of modern pioneers Jean Erdman

and Charles Weidman; later danced with Ballet Hysell (New Orleans Ballet), Anaheim Ballet, and

free-lanced as a modern dancer with several  Southern California companies.

Before moving to Colorado in the summer of 2007, Karen was a Professor of Dance at

Orange Coast College, Costa Mesa, CA., where for 24 years she taught ballet and modern,

was the Dance Department chair for 17 years and established one of the first Pilates “certificate”

programs in a college dance curriculum.

Karen is a certified Pilates and Gyrotonic ® instructor and has her own studio Jasper

Peak Pilates in Lafayette.
